The Pearl of Africa
Uganda offers some of the most diverse and rewarding birding and wildlife experiences on Earth. From the legendary Shoebill in papyrus wetlands to Mountain Gorillas in misty Bwindi, this 18-day journey covers an extraordinary range of habitats, cultures, and encounters.
Arrival in Entebbe
Arrive in Uganda and settle in after your journey before enjoying optional afternoon birding at the Entebbe Botanical Gardens along the shores of Lake Victoria. This lush lakeside habitat blends mature woodland, open lawns, and tropical gardens, creating ideal conditions for a diverse bird list right from the start. Ross's and Great Blue Turacos move through the canopy, colorful weavers gather in the palms, and Superb Sunbirds glitter among flowering shrubs. Black-and-white Colobus and Vervet Monkeys often add to the excitement. The setting offers a relaxed introduction to Uganda's warm hospitality and equatorial biodiversity.
Mabamba Wetlands & Mpanga Forest
An early start takes us by canoe through the tranquil papyrus channels of Mabamba Wetland, one of East Africa's most celebrated birding sites. Here we search for the legendary Shoebill, along with Blue-headed Coucal, Papyrus Gonolek, and Malachite Kingfisher. The peaceful glide through this community-protected swamp is unforgettable. In the afternoon we visit Mpanga Forest, a compact tropical rainforest alive with forest specialists and primates. Red-tailed Monkeys and forest birds provide a perfect contrast to the morning's wetland birding.
To Murchison Falls National Park
We journey north through rural Uganda, watching the landscape transition from cultivated hills to open savanna. Birding en route may produce shrikes, cisticolas, and francolins, while roadside markets offer glimpses into everyday Ugandan life. By late afternoon we arrive in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda's largest protected area, where savanna stretches toward the Nile River and the adventure truly begins.
Murchison Falls: Game Drive & Nile Boat Safari
A morning game drive through Borassus palm savanna offers chances for Elephant, Rothschild's Giraffe, Buffalo, and possibly Lion. The birdlife is equally impressive, with Secretarybirds striding through grasslands and Abyssinian Rollers perched atop acacias. In the afternoon we cruise the Nile toward the Lake Albert delta, passing hippos, crocodiles, and dazzling concentrations of waterbirds. Goliath Herons stalk the shallows, Saddle-billed Storks patrol the shoreline, and Shoebill is once again possible.
Budongo Forest
We head into Budongo Forest, one of East Africa's finest lowland rainforests. Towering mahoganies create a cathedral-like atmosphere alive with calls of hornbills and greenbuls. Specialties such as Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, Rufous-sided Broadbill, and perhaps the elusive Green-breasted Pitta await. The forest is also rich in primates, and sightings of Black-and-white Colobus, Red-tailed Monkeys, and even Chimpanzees are possible.
The Royal Mile
Today we explore the famed Royal Mile, a legendary birding trail where forest edges allow excellent viewing into the canopy. Hornbills fly overhead, barbets call from fruiting trees, and ant-thrushes skulk along the forest floor. Sabine's Spinetail may circle above the clearings while colorful kingfishers flash along shaded streams. The slow, immersive forest birding here is often among the most rewarding of the tour.
Transfer to Kibale Forest
Driving south toward Kibale, the scenery becomes greener and more mountainous. Tea plantations line the hillsides and the distant Rwenzori Mountains often appear on the horizon. Kibale's rich rainforest hosts an extraordinary diversity of primates, and the evening atmosphere is filled with forest sounds. Birding along the way introduces new species as we transition into mid-elevation forest habitat.
Chimpanzee Tracking & Bigodi Wetland
After briefing, we enter Kibale Forest to track wild Chimpanzees. Following their calls through dense forest is an exhilarating experience, culminating in time spent observing their social behavior. In the afternoon we explore Bigodi Wetland, a community-managed sanctuary where boardwalks wind through papyrus and swamp forest. Birds, butterflies, and monkeys abound, and local guides share stories of conservation success.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
We continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda's most diverse ecosystems. Savannah plains, crater lakes, and wetlands combine to create outstanding wildlife viewing. An afternoon boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel brings us close to hippos, crocodiles, and large flocks of waterbirds, often with elephants grazing along the shore.
Game Drive & Cultural Visit
Morning game drives across open savanna offer chances for Lion, Leopard, Uganda Kob, and Giant Forest Hog. With the Rwenzori Mountains in the background, the scenery is spectacular. Later we visit Lake Katwe, where traditional salt mining methods have been practiced for generations, providing insight into local livelihoods and culture.
To Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
We travel south toward Bwindi, possibly passing through the Ishasha sector famous for tree-climbing lions. As we ascend, the air cools and the vegetation changes to lush montane forest. Afternoon birding near our lodge introduces Albertine Rift endemics in one of Africa's most celebrated birding destinations.
Gorilla Tracking
Today brings the unforgettable experience of tracking Mountain Gorillas. Hiking through dense forest, guided by trackers, we eventually encounter a family group. Observing these gentle giants at close range—feeding, grooming, and interacting—is a profound wildlife moment and a highlight of any African journey.
Birding Bwindi
A full day of birding in Bwindi reveals its incredible diversity. Montane forest specialists, colorful sunbirds, and rare Albertine Rift endemics fill the day. The cool forest, misty valleys, and rich birdlife create a magical atmosphere, with primates and butterflies adding to the experience.
Lake Mburo National Park
We travel to Lake Mburo, where rolling hills and acacia savanna provide a striking contrast to Bwindi. This park hosts species absent elsewhere in Uganda, including Zebra, Impala, and Eland. Birding focuses on acacia specialists and open-country species.
Game Drive & Boat Safari
Morning game drives reveal herds of zebra and antelope across the grasslands. A boat trip on Lake Mburo offers close views of hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds, while African Fish Eagles call overhead.
Leisure & Optional Birding
A relaxed day allows time for optional birding, walking safaris, or simply enjoying the scenery. The park's peaceful atmosphere provides a fitting wind-down after the intensity of the previous days.
Return to Entebbe
We drive back toward Entebbe, stopping at the Equator for photos and craft shopping. The journey offers final chances for roadside birding and reflections on Uganda's remarkable diversity.
Departure
Depending on flight times, we may enjoy one last birding session at the Entebbe Botanical Gardens before departing, ending an unforgettable journey through Uganda's extraordinary habitats and wildlife.
